Another month passes and more veterans die silently, in the shadows, at the end of their ropes. While D.C. rats get fatter, our nation’s veterans continue to fight for service connection disabilities, continue to battle against a broken healthcare system and continue to suffer in fear of the VA removing their current disability percentage, so they suffer in silence and in fear.
This I have witnessed for, now, decades unfortunately.
I’ve heard such phrases as:
“If I submit an appeal, they can lower my percentage…because they said they could lower my percentage”
“I’m tethered to the VA because I rely on them for my healthcare”
“The VA deliberately scheduled appointments and didn’t tell me, then said I was a no-show and removed my disability rating”
“The VA states the numerous shock mitigation reports that were generated were not initiated by them, so the VA does not/will not recognize the data”
I wish I could say I was joking, but unfortunately I am not.
We spend our days consumed in our own drama and we think back and say “I miss the simpler times, before cell phones and the internet” but honestly the technology part should be viewed as a blessing. We now have access we never had before. Now, I do miss the smell of a library and the feel while the library trying to gather data, but I truly embrace knowledge at my fingertips.
Sure, life was a little simpler then, but you really look hard at those times, you still had drama, regardless how or where you grew up. The one thing I wasn’t cognizant of was how rotten politicians were. That epiphany was not a welcomed surprise.
Politicians continue to boast about how pro-veteran they are, yet still flood committees with bills, to bury important ones and to build up their re-election numbers (by boasting about how many bills they proposed).
If you truly are invested in saying you won’t stand for it any longer, you will begin by first going onto Congress.gov and doing some digging on your elected officials. Then you compile that data and request a sit down with your representative. Once seated, ask your representative how many bills did they propose into the VA Committee? How many Bills advanced into the Senate for approval (in other words: passed the House vote)? As how many bills advanced into laws?
Finally: Ask them to specify what those bills were they put their names on.
Hold your representatives accountable for their promises. Not all politicians are crooked, but unfortunately those ‘good’ politicians get buried by the bad, because they refuse to do their bidding. It’s time to get involved in your futures.
Don’t complain about how hard you have it, if you refuse to do anything about it.
Happy September.
